Becoming a Member...

Application for membership with the Sauk Prairie Ambulance Association is open to any person over the age of 19 with a clean driving record, clean criminal record, and good moral character.  Applications are screened by the Association’s Membership Committee, who also conduct a complete background check.  The Association asks for a minimum of a two-year commitment of service.

Upon successful completion of the application process, members will be thoroughly trained by the Association.  The cost of all training, equipment and uniforms is provided by the Association.

Current CPR certification (American Heart Association Healthcare Provider course) is required and Hepatitis-B vaccinations are recommended before a member is actually permitted to ride along on the ambulance.  Members must be certified in an emergency vehicles operations course before they are permitted to drive an ambulance.

The following list shows the training and membership requirements for all members:

· Basic orientation by the Training Director (3 to 4 hours)

· Bloodborne and airborne infectious disease training by the Healthcare Officer

· American Heart Association Healthcare Provider CPR course (with annual recertifications)

· Privacy (HIPAA) training by the Privacy Officer (2 to 3 hours)

· Emergency vehicles operations course

· EMT-Basic class (140 hours) with a refresher course (40 hours) every two years

· Monthly training classes or recertification of skills are provided by the service (usually the third Monday of each month)

· Monthly business meetings (usually the first Monday of each month)

· Once established on a regular crew, members make a minimum commitment of one day or night per week and one 48-hour weekend shift every ten weeks

· After becoming licensed as an EMT-Basic, there is an opportunity to advance to the EMT-Intermediate Technician level.
